Principle of the Periscope : In a Periscope, light from an object strikes the top Prism at 45 and bounces off at the same angle to reach the bottom prism. It works on the principle of total internal reflection (T.I.R.) of the light phenomenon. In Periscope, We use the totally reflecting prisms which turn the ray through 90. Uses Of Periscopes : Periscopes uses prisms providing magnification operate on Submarines and in various fields of Science. People first started using Periscope in submarines to allow sailors to see above the Water. How this Periscope Works Inside this Periscope There are 2 Prisms that are Placed in Parallel and Facing Each Other. Also, there are 2 Mirrors that are Fixed near the Observer’s Eye and on the Other End. The 2 Prisms in this Periscope are Placed at 45 degree angle. According to the laws of Reflection, When a ray of light falls on a plane surface. it gets reflected at an angle equal to incident angle. The Reflected light falls on second prisms and is again reflected. Hence, the first prism captures the desired image and reflects surface of second Prism.
